What is that really thick yarn called?
“Chunky” may be the least-regulated term used to describe yarn. It is generally understood to refer to a yarn lying somewhere in that gray range between Aran and super bulky, but it is often used simply as an adjective rather than as the name of a specific yarn weight.
Which is thicker bulky or chunky yarn?
Chunky Yarns These yarns are thicker than worsted and knit to a gauge of 3-3.75 stitches per inch on a size U.S. 9-11 needle. Bulky Yarns These yarns are larger yet than aran or chunky. They are worked on large needles with a US size of 11 or greater. There are lots of fun patterns using these large yarns.
How thick should knitting yarn be?
Yarn Weight (Thickness)

Fine or sport-weight | 3–6 | 5–6 |
Light worsted or DK (double-knitting) | 5–7 | 5–5 1/2 |

Bulky or chunky | 10–11 | 3–3 1/2 |
Why is chunky yarn so expensive?
The bulkier your yarn the more expensive they get. If you use chunky yarns, you may need more skeins. This is because most chunky and bulky yarns have short yardage per skein. But if you knit projects like blankets and scarves, you may use more affordable yarns.
How many balls of yarn does it take to make a chunky blanket?
The average size blanket is made with 15-25 loops, I made mine using 20 total. More loops will yield a wider blanket. You can also make it longer by adding MORE skeins of yarn. Mine took me about 1.5-2 hours total to make from start to finish (with no breaks).
What is thicker 4 ply or 2 ply?
Structure of a 4 ply yarn
This was great and you could easily see that 2 strands of 4 ply are about the same thickness as DK, 2 strands of lace weight are about the same as 4 ply.
